Our Debate Scorecard - Romney: 1, Obama: Less than Zero

Thursday, October 04, 2012

Who thought the high-definition, insta-judgement world of modern communications would be a problem for the engaging, smooth and canny delivery of Barack Obama? Apparently, Mitt "JFK" Romney.

Like the Nixon/Kennedy debate of 1960, if you heard last night's debate on the radio, you probably thought it was a tie. If you read a transcript (and fact-checked it), you probably thought the president won. Unfortunately for Obama, not many Americans were huddled around the telegraph machine last night.

Obama was absolutely listless. No doubt, that was likely somewhat by design so as to keep from getting dragged down into an un-presidential brawl. But, if you're going to be boring with your rhetoric, you'd better be engaging with your presence. Obama was neither. He appeared to be, with varying consistency, annoyed to be there; bored; and drugged on downers.

By our count, Obama lost four of the five categories for judging the debate: likeability, leadership, narrative and engagement. He was particularly bad on engagement, where we gave him a 1 score out of a possible 5.  He tied with Romney in only one measure, substance. And that's really just because we took one point off Romney's score for some dubious claims.

But to all the hyperventilating Democrats and jubilant Republicans: As embarrassing a debate as that was for Obama, the headlines and praise will last just one day for Romney. This thing is far from over. One thing is for sure though, and this won't change until Election Day--the pressure is on Obama now to make his case. No more running out the clock.

Our scorecard is below. Let us know your opinion of the debate.
